Quickstart guide ================ This guide is draft and will be updated. Powering the device =================== There are several options for powering the modem: 1. Power Adapter (UK only) -------------------------- We sell an AC/DC adapter at: http://cheapbuyuk.co.uk/forum/6-Power-Supply But this is suitable for only the UK and we only deliver this item to the UK. 2. Micro-fit connector ---------------------- You can purchase a Micro-Fit power connector here: http://cheapbuyuk.co.uk/forum/8-MicroFit-Power-Connectors This can be adapted to your power supply e.g. you can adapt a local AC/DC power supply to use this, or alternatively any other DC power supply e.g. 12v rail in a PC. Please note electrical specifications in manual and also for your PC (where relevant). 3. Crocodile clips ------------------ By removing the outer case, you can expose the 2 power lugs and directly connect power by using crocodile clips. [Insert picture] 4. Battery power ---------------- Not discussed here, see manuals for information. Serial communication ==================== Please note that the modems are often set with 9600 8N1 settings and not 115200 8N1 as per the manual. When experiencing difficulty in establishing serial communication, we recommend trying both speeds to make sure that it is not this configuration difference. A fixed speed can then be set manually and saved using the appropriate AT commands. e.g. enable auto-bauding: AT+IPR=0 set speed to 115200: AT+IPR=115200 save speed settings: AT&W See AT+IPR, AT+ICF commands for more details in the AT commands manual One customer has confirmed that "serial port works well with RTS & CTS shorted enabling a 3wire only port with no handshake." If you are using Hyperterminal or another terminal program, make sure you have local echo enabled or enable echo on the modem. Otherwise the modem will take your commands but not issue a visible response on the screen. e.g. Type AT and press the modem should respond with OK. This will verify that you are communicating with the modem. If you cannot see characters entered on the screen, enter ATE1V1. Aerial and Signals ================== Please note that the modem is designed to connect to an exterior antenna via an appropriate cable e.g. for car mounting. However, it is also possible to attach aerial directly to the modem, but in this case, we recommend you use the supplied aerial mating pin to get best reception. This is a small piece of metal which fits between the modem and the aerial. SIM cards ========= The modem unit is unlocked and should therefore work with all compatible telecom providers. Note that some providers (e.g. 3 in the UK) may lock their SIM cards in some way. For example, one UK provider locks their USIMs so that they do not work with any non-3G phone.
